Preparation team of national standards, Terms and Definitions of LED Lighting for Plant Growth, was set up in Shanghai on August 31, 2013. Its first meeting was held at Shanghai Huating Hotel.
The meeting was chaired by Ruan Jun, Deputy Secretary-General of China Solid State Lighting Alliance-Standardization Committee and Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Solid-state Lighting. Institution and enterprise representatives from State Key Laboratory of Solid-state Lighting, China Photoelectric Technology Development Center, Nanjing Agricultural University, Philips (China) Investments Co., Ltd, EVERFINE Corporation, Xiamen Hualian Electronics Co., Ltd, Wuxi Huazhaohong Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd, Hangzhou Hanhui Optoelectronic Technology Co., Ltd and Shanghai Yaming lighting Co., Ltd attended the meeting.
In the meeting, the background, main contents and preparation patterns of the national standard were thoroughly discussed along with schedule and mission deployment.
Compared with the traditional lighting, LED light source could form spectral spectrum that is basically consistent with plant photosynthesis and morphogenesis. It was characterized by high efficiency, low energy consumption, mercury-free, precise wavelength, and intelligent control. It had been successfully used in filling light at room temperature, plant tissue culture, plant factory, plant genetics, breeding of plants as well as many other fields. In recent years, LED, as a lighting source for plant growth, had been a very important component of LED lighting market, and attracted attention from various institutions around the world, such as the United States Department of agriculture, South Korean Ministry of knowledge economy, Netherlands Philips, Japan's mitsubishi chemical holdings and Showa Denko, and Taiwan Everlight Electronics. Ltd.
However, as LED lighting for plant growth had characteristics of interdisciplinary and cross-application. LED lighting source, optical parameters, physiological responses of plants, using environment, measurement methods and definitions, terminology all differ from general lighting. Misuse of them affected LED application and promotion in agriculture facility. There was an urgent need for uniform definitions and specifications in LED lighting for plant growth to avoid defining chaos, terminology inconsistencies to ensure preparation, inspection, acceptance, testing, and standardization to be consistent in LED lighting for plant growth, laying the foundations for LED applications in agricultural extension. Terms and Definitions of LED Lighting for Plant Growth, managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology according to [2013] Document No. 30 issued by Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China was being prepared by the State Key Laboratory of Solid-state Lighting (SKL).
The standards preparation work officially had started. During the meeting, standards, principles, main contents, priority issues and the requirements of the standards as well as work assignments and schedules were explained. Experts conducted detailed and in-depth discussion.
Standards preparation group said that strengthening and coordination among the parties concerned were needed. They also recommended more participation of institutions and experts so as to make quality assurance of standards and finish national standards establishment and revision tasks on time.
